Vermont Farm Table

Just finished building this table, I shot some video while I was making it, and will have it up on youtube in a few days.

I painted this from a photograph I took, while on a road trip  last  June in Vermont. I am trying to capture the feeling of the weather which tends to sneak up on you in the Vermont mountains. The frame is Walnut

Building a Vermont Farm Table

The Table legs measure 23.5" and need to be 28.75" so I used a large piece of poplar to increase the height

To soften the look of the of poplar block,  I cut  a scallop shape at the bottom end with the band saw

 Mortise and Tenon is a good strong joint to use for joining the apron and leg stand together

Building a Vermont Farm Table

I found this set of old table legs out in the barn. These legs cleaned up and painted will work great for the base of the table I'm building for my kitchen.

 

  

The legs need to be removed from the old base and squared up.

 

  

I'm making the table top with quarter sawn white oak, when selecting wood for a project it's good to take your time . When making a table top I like to place the wood together and mark it in the order that it will be glued up. More to view in a day or two.

Build A Simple Headboard

 Build a simple headboard with stock materials from Loews or Home Depot

1. Make a face frame with 1x4 and 1x6 poplar wood. Poplar is a good wood to use when painting. True measurement of 1x4 is 3/4" x 3.1/2" and 1x6 is 3/4" x 5.1/2"

 

2. Predrill and screw 1x2 poplar to face frame. the true measurement of 1x2 is 3/4" x 1.1/2"

  

3. Screw 3/4" birch plywood or MDF to the back of the face frame

4. Screw 1x2 to the top- back, of the headboard. ( Notice this piece has 25 degree angle rip, this is for installation purpose.) When installing the headboard, attach a piece of wood with the same angle to the wall, level in the opposite direction and the headboard will hang straight and level.

 

  

5. A small piece of crown  molding works well for the top of the headboard. Ironically this molding is referred to as bed molding

 

  

6. Base cap molding is used to picture frame the panels and finish the bottom of the headboard.
